Tip: These are some details you may have missed from the new Netflix show Inventing Anna!

Inventing Anna 7: The Real Story Changes Seven Things

The Shonda Rhimes restricted series Inventing Anna many of the events are based on the life and times of Anna Delvey/Sorokin . The Netflix series admits that there is a lot of fiction in each episode.

Anna Garner (Julia Garner), attempts to induct herselfinto New York's upper echelons and create her own social club for artists, The Anna Delvey Foundation (or ADF). She makes some very extreme moves. While much of the plot is true, some events are stretched or made up—and some aren't even as strange as the truth.

What has happened to Anna Delvey since 'Inventing Anna?

In the end credits, Anna Delvey said that she was released from jail in February 2021. She was then picked up by Immigration and Customs Enforcement a month later for violating her visa. She is still pursuing her release by her legal counsel. Her support network in New York has supported her and has refused to be deported to Germany. Pop culture has made references to Anna and published a lot of media about her thoughts.

Anna pursued her artistic interests even though she was in prison. In May 2022, a public exhibition featuring the drawings Anna made in ICE detention titled "Allegedly," was held at New York's Public Hotel. Twenty sketches were included that reflected Anna's experiences before, during and after her trial. Although some people didn't like it, the event attracted a lot of attention and sales were very lucrative. Despite being imprisoned Anna is still able to draw attention. She also seems uniquely skilled at convincing people with money to give it. Allegedly.

Vivian Kent's behavior is sensationalized

Inventing-Anna-Vivian-Kent-Anna-Chlumsky-holding-phone

Vivian Kent ( Anna Chlumsky), a reporter that wrote the famous piece about Anna Delvey is fictional as is Manhattan Magazine. With some fundamental differences, Kent is actually based upon Jessica Pressler from New York Magazine. Pressler did not assist the defense in the case and she never relied upon other journalists for her research. She insists she never attempted to enter Anna's German parents' home.

Pressler was actually pregnant while she wrote the article and during their interview. Although she did actually travel to Germany with Anna, she helped plan it and all the people she met knew that she was there. The most disappointing thing about the conspiracy mapping wall Vivian Kent set up in her baby’s nursery. In real life, it was much more boring series of spreadsheets.

Certain names have been changed to protect the rich

Some names and locations are true to life (Anna, her friend and lawyer, as well as a few hotels that she bribed), but others were faked or altered. Some characters, such as Anna's mentor Nora Radford and her financial lawyer Alan Reed are most likely to be based on real people.

Anna Delvey had contact with Billy MacFarland from the tragic Fyre Festival, and also Pharma Bro/pre-convicted felon Martin Shkreli. It is also alleged that Shkreli played tracks from Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter album before it was released.

We don't know much about the boyfriend

Inventing Anna Saamer Usmani

The series' first episodes focus on Anna's relationships with Chase Sikorski ( Saamer Usmani), the inventor of Wake, a dream-mining application. Although he is fictional, theories about his origins have been circulated. Although his name is not in Pressler's article it seems that he did agree to tell his story, even if his name was.

Anna had a boyfriend who she traveled with extensively. However, not much information is available about their relationship. According to her, she had the idea for ADF when they split up.

Interviews with Rikers aren't So Cushy

Even Anna Delvey must slum it in prison, as she discovered. The series features Anna humiliating Vivian to get the 'VIP treatment', but Anna claims that there wasn't any tea at Rikers. There was instead a cash-only machine for coffee and no porcelain cups. Also, the courtrooms of the series are more extravagant than those in Anna's actual trial.

But, how accurate is the illustration of the multibus journey required to reach Rikers Island to make a frequent visit to the island? It seems pretty true.

This Accent is Flawed, Despite Being Iconic

Anna has a unique accent that is hard to miss in this series. Many have heard Anna's accent, and it isn't exactly like hers. It may not have the most convincing fake accent but it can be confusing. Perhaps it works well for fake heiresses with fuzzy transcontinental backstories.

Garner was able to speak with Anna in person to gain a better understanding of her accent, but it was mostly up to Garner to put the pieces together. The knowledge of Anna's European heritage and the New York cosmopolitan identity that she wanted to portray was incorporated by Garner. Although the result is difficult to understand and place, it could also be said that Anna was the cause. What is her take? It's hard to determine where Garner's Anna comes from so'she did it right in some way'.

It wasn't a fake German. Two fake Germans were found.

Anthony Edward Alan Reed Katie Lowes Rachel DeLoache Williams Split

One detail in the series is less crazy than what you would see in real life. In Inventing Anna, Anna creates Peter Hennecke (a German accountant) to represent her trust. She uses fake emails addresses and a voice-changing program to trick Alan Reed and financial professionals into thinking she's talking to Hennecke, when in reality it is Anna.

The prosecution claims that Anna also created Bettina Wagner to appease Rachel DeLoache Williams. Anna is a former friend and claimed Anna cheated her by paying a large Moroccan hotel bill. Anna might have created many more accountants if she was able to continue working towards ADF.

Some Anna's Escapades were exaggerated or made up

While many of the strange events in the series are true, a handful of storylines have been embellished or totally fabricated. Anna hasn't recalled ever being pushed to the limit on a friend's yacht, or spending $400,000 on a Bergdorf Goodman credit card.

These are not so farfetched when compared with the likely things she did. Although she wasn't found guilty, Williams allegedly stayed in multiple hotels and paid for a private plane. While some plot points in Inventing Anna are fabricated, they do not seem to be more unbelievable than the actual story. It's difficult to not wonder, as the series winds down if Anna really does know the truth.
